Double Minded

James 1:6-8 (KJV) “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

Being double minded is the opposite of being pure in heart. To say that the double-minded are unstable in all their ways is to say that they fluctuate between following God’s way and their own way.

The psalmist speaks of those who have a double heart. Psa. 12:2 (KJV) “They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.” These are those who are loyal to two. Perhaps they are loyal to God and man or loyal to friend and enemy. These are the faithful who lie. Jesus taught about serving two masters: Matt. 6:24 (KJV) “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” It is impossible to maintain friendship with the world and friendship with God.  James 4:4 (KJV) says, “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

Here is a story of the wisest man of Israel and how he fell with double mindedness: 1 Kin. 11:1-8 (KJV) “But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; 2Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. 3And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. 4For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. 5For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father. 7Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. 8And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.”

We can try all we want to be in the world and of it. But separation is a spiritual law. If we are drawn to carnal things, we will be repelled of Christ. The more we are drawn to Christ, the more we are repelled from the world.

Being single minded toward God means that a man fears God: Prov. 28:14 (KJV) “Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.” Being single minded toward God means that man wins spiritual wars: 1 Chr. 12:33 (KJV) “Of Zebulun, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all instruments of war, fifty thousand, which could keep rank: they were not of double heart.”

The cure for double mindedness is found in James 4:8 (KJV) “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.” Draw nigh to God and you will be separated from the world and will be single minded. Is this what we want? Will we be able to receive all that God has and be able to take the rejection that the world offers? God is looking for a remnant who will say, “Yes.”
