Living Intercession

Are all Christians called to be intercessors?  That question is best answered by gaining an understanding of what intercession is.  According to The American Heritage Dictionary, “intercession” is entreaty in favor of another, or intervention on behalf of another.  It is good to know the definition of a word, but greater to have the understanding of how to apply it to our lives according to its divine purpose.  The Bible speaks of making intercession by means of prayer and supplication, but it does not imply that interceding is limited to simply praying for others.

(Mat. 15:30-31 KJV)  “And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them. Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.”

Today, many Christians sit idle, just waiting for the chance to be first in line when God moves, or pours out blessings.  Seasoned Christians know that the greatest spiritual blessings do not come to those who stand in a line, but rather to those who follow the path that leads to the blessings.  That path is living obedient lives of intercession by the direction of God’s Word, and His Holy Spirit.

(Phil. 2:4 KJV) “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

What does Philippians 2:4 mean?  Exactly what it says!  Our focus is not to remain self-centered.  Are we brave enough to ask the Lord how and where to apply this scripture?  To just skip over this text would cause us to miss God and to forfeit many blessings for ourselves as well as others.

Now that we know what to do, let us look at how to do it:

BE A SERVANT TO OTHERS
(Mat. 20:27-28 KJV)  “And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

 COMFORT OTHERS
(1Cor. 1:3-4 KJV)  “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”

 FORGIVE & FORBEAR OTHERS
(Luke 6:37  KJV)  “Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:”

 EDIFY OTHERS
(Rom. 14:19 KJV)  19Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.”

The scriptures also instruct us to: LOVE, to CONSIDER, and to PRAY for one another.  Remember, the accuser of the brethren would try to have us bite and devour one another, but we will see the beauty of living intercession if we choose to glorify God by preferring others above ourselves.
