Maturing the Home – A Message for Fathers

Eph. 5:21-6:4 (KJV)

There are many natural and supernatural guidelines in the Bible for the Family of God. The Old Testament teaches steadfast love and the New Testament teaches unconditional love. The New Testament changed family from ancestral to the family of God through Jesus Christ. Jesus changed the entire structure of the home. He compared everything spiritually about God to the natural family. Explaining the wife’s new roles and the husband's new roles, He gave liberty. It is important that we change our humanistic views of the family. God the Father should be the example to the earthly father. One example of learning the Father is by asking “Which is harder? Giving our own life or giving our child's life?”

In every area, order and discipline must be applied to be sure we will realize the purpose of God for the family. How do we know if our discipline is enough? Discipline is not punishment, it is making a disciple.

Deu 6:7 (KJV)  "And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."

When thou sittest in thine house are you watching or talking? Children need our time and open communication. Children need personal motivation, mental creativity, and involvement in others’ lives. Whenever parents come to the altar, they should bring their children with them to continually offer them to the Lord.

When thou walkest by the way give attention in everyday activities. People who are attention deficit often are being or have been neglected in the home. They need instruction on how to show love and concern since it was not shown to them. It is important that the family be in church as much as possible to help train and give biblical direction for the family.

1 Pet 5:56 (KJV) “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:"

Encourage your children to show emotions. (Must be done with self-control) Do not bind their emotions. They need to laugh with you, cry with you, and pray with you

When thou liest down pray. Children need winding down before bedtime. Pray, get rid of frustrations, and prepare for the next day.

When thou risest up pray. Develop a life long habit of morning prayer. Everything done that day will be done to the Lord.

Fathers, let us rise up and be the leaders that God has called us to in our homes. Let’s encourage one another to good works and see to it that our children are not lost because of a lack of love and discipline. May we train according to the word of God:

Prov 20:11 (KJV) “Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right."

Prov 29:17 (KJV) “Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul."

Prov 22:6 (KJV) “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

Prov 29:15 (KJV) “The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame."

Mal 2:15 (KJV) “And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth."

Prov 8:32-33 (KJV) “Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. 33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not."

Prov 17:6 (KJV) “Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers."

Prov 20:7 (KJV) “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him."

Prov 31:28 (KJV) “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."

Prov 29:21 (KJV) “He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length."
