Respect for the Recompense of the Reward

Heb 11:24-26 (KJV)  “By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward.”

How easy it is for us to read over the scriptures and never realize the depth of what is being proclaimed, and therefore not obtain the full benefits from their contents.  In Hebrews 11:24-26, we read about how Moses abandoned a life of worldliness and sin, and chose instead that he might rather suffer reproach to follow God.  It is important to us today to see how he accomplished that transformation.  The scripture says Moses did that “by faith” and then shows us the manner in which the application of faith was made to his life was by, “showing respect for the recompense of the reward.”  To understand this fully we must dig into these words and find their meaning and application.

According to the Strong’s Hebrew Greek Dictionary, to show respect means to look away from everything else in an effort to give intent regard.  Turn fully to God.

To recompense means to compensate; to make return for any thing given, done or suffered.  Give every part of our lives to what God wants.

Moses quickly discovered that the changes in his life would have to become more than just adjustments to his social status and behavior patterns.  These changes could only become real through looking away from everything else and surrendering his life fully to the author of his faith.  When Moses first attempted to fulfill the call of God to deliver His people, he got ahead of God, and the result was that he murdered a man.  Though he was a man who was used to doing things his own way, in the most powerful empire in the world, Moses quickly discovered that the true power and deliverance of God was a reward that accompanied those who had respect and reverence for the way that God wants to move in their lives.

Phi 3:12-14 (KJV) “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but [this] one thing [I do], forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Just as in the days of Moses, we must also understand that the prize will become a part of the lives of those who chose not to take God for granted, but rather chose to show respect for the recompense of the reward.
